Getting Rid of Muddy Footprints Before Winter Sets In

Practical ways to keep muddy footprints off your carpets this autumn, plus how to remove the ones that get through, for busy households and pet owners.
A plain grey doormat inside a front door, with wellies and walking boots on a white shoe rack and a clean, light carpeted hallway beyond.

Every wet day in autumn leaves the same trail: a line of brown prints from the front door to the kitchen. Muddy footprints on carpets are easy to ignore for a day or two, but trodden-in soil wears the pile and dulls entrance areas, and by winter the hallway can look grey from wall to wall. The good news is that most of the work is prevention, and the rest is a simple routine.

The Met Office notes that wetter and windier weather becomes more likely as autumn moves towards winter, so the next few weeks are the best time to set up habits that keep the mud at the door.

1. Stop the Mud at the Door

The cheapest carpet protection is a good mat. Use two if you can: a coarse mat outside to scrape off soil and a textile mat just inside to catch the damp. A mat only works if it is long enough for a few steps, so a tiny welcome mat will not do much on its own.

Shake out or vacuum the mats regularly. A mat full of dry soil simply hands it to the next pair of shoes.

2. Set Up a Shoes-Off Spot

A shoe rack or tray by the door makes taking shoes off the easy option for the family and visitors. Add a basket of old towels for wiping dogs’ paws after walks, as four muddy feet cover a lot of carpet quickly.

If you have pale carpet in the hall, a washable runner over the busiest stretch takes the worst of the wear and can go straight in the machine.

3. How to Remove Muddy Footprints on Carpets

When prints do get through, resist the urge to scrub them while they are wet. Wet soil smears and spreads, so follow this order instead:

  • Blot away surface moisture with a plain white cloth.
  • Leave the prints until they are completely dry.
  • Loosen the dried soil gently and vacuum slowly in several directions.
  • Blot any remaining mark with a little mild washing-up liquid in cool water, after a patch test, then rinse with clean water and press dry.

Use as little water as possible. A carpet that stays damp for a long time can develop mould and odours. For leaf marks and heavier stains, our guide on how to remove common carpet stains goes into more detail.

4. Vacuum Entrance Areas More Often

Dry grit left in the pile gets ground in every time someone walks over it, which is why entrance areas tend to look worn first. Through autumn, vacuum the hall, stairs and the first metre of each room off the hallway more often than the rest of the house, going over each area slowly.

5. Your Before-Winter Checklist

  • Outdoor scraper mat and indoor textile mat in place.
  • Shoe rack and paw towels by the door.
  • Washable runner on the busiest stretch of pale carpet.
  • Entrance areas vacuumed several times a week.
  • Fresh prints left to dry, then vacuumed and blotted, never scrubbed.
